About Fisheries Science and Aquaculture:

Fisheries Science is the branch of science which deals with the management and understanding fisheries. It is basically a marine science branch that studies on the life history and state of fish stocks. Fisheries Science provides information to managers on the state and life history of the stocks. It is an organized effort which is related to the capturing of fish including inland and sea.

Aquaculture is the rearing of aquatic animals or the cultivation of aquatic plants for food. It includes the breeding, harvesting, farming, and rearing of fish, mollusks, aquatic plants, algae, and other organisms present in the water environment.

Different Types of Fisheries Science and Aquaculture Courses and Their Duration:

There are a number of courses available in Fisheries Science and Aquaculture.

List of Courses Available in Fisheries Science:

  • Certificate Course: The Certificate Course in Fresh Water Ornamental Fish Culture can be done after 10th The duration of the course is six to eight months.
  • Diploma Course: A candidate can do Diploma Course, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fisheries Science and the duration is two years.
  • Undergraduate Course: A candidate can do Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Fisheries Science and the duration of the course is three years.
  • Postgraduate Course: A candidate can do post graduation in Industrial Fisheries and the duration of the Master of Science (M.Sc.) course is two years.
  • Doctoral Course: A candidate can do the doctoral course in Fisheries Economics and the duration of the Ph.D. course is three years.

List of Courses Available in Aquaculture:

  • Diploma Course: A candidate can do Postgraduate diploma in Aquaculture and the duration is two years.
  • Certificate Course: The Certificate Course in Aquaculture can be done after 10th The duration of the course is six to eight months.
  • Undergraduate Course: A candidate can do graduation in Aquaculture and the duration of the course is four years. The course can be done by the following streams:
  • F.Sc. (Applied Aquaculture)
  • F.Sc. (Freshwater Aquaculture)
  • F.Sc. (Inland Aquaculture)
  • Postgraduate Course: A candidate can do post graduation in Aquaculture and the duration of the Master of Science (M.Sc.) course is two years. The course can be done by the following streams:
  • F.Sc. (Applied Aquaculture)
  • F.Sc. (Freshwater Aquaculture)
  • F.Sc. (Inland Aquaculture)

Eligibility Criteria for Different Courses:

  • Certificate Course: A candidate with any educational background can do a certificate course in Fisheries Science.
  • Diploma Course: A candidate who has done 10th or 12th can opt for a diploma course. For the postgraduation diploma, a candidate must have done graduation from a recognized university.
  • Undergraduate Courses: A candidate who has passed 10+2 examination with Science as a stream and biology as a subject from a recognized board can apply for the undergraduate course.
  • Postgraduate Courses: A candidate who has done Bachelor of Science or bachelor of technology in the relevant field from a recognized university.
  • Doctoral Course: A candidate who has done graduation and postgraduation from a recognized university in the relevant field can apply for the Doctoral course.

Admission Process for Different Courses:

  • Diploma Course: Admission in the diploma course of fisheries science and aquaculture is done on the basis of marks scored in the 12th The admission in the postgraduate diploma course is done on the basis of marks obtained in the graduation or in the entrance examination.
  • Undergraduate Course: The admission in Bachelor of Science course in aquaculture and fisheries science is done on the basis of entrance examinations conducted by the universities. NEET is the national level examination which shortlists the eligible candidates for various fields. Also, there are some institutes which shortlist candidates on the basis of marks scored in the senior secondary examination.
  • Postgraduate Course: After graduation, a candidate can apply for post-graduation. Various exam authorities of different colleges conduct entrance examinations for admission in the postgraduate course.
