About Library Sciences

Library science is an interdisciplinary subject it borrows studies from the fields of management, information technology, and education, in order to collect, preserve and organize all the information sources that are available. and is concerned with the retrieval and management of information – of any form.


Library Science courses are available in the form of Diplomas, Certificates as well as a Bachelor’s degree. The Certificate course is available in Library Science (C.Lib and Library and Information Science (C.LISc.) The Diploma course and Bachelor’s degree course are also available in Library Science as well as Library and Information Science. For candidates willing to do advanced studies of Library Science, they can do Master of Library Science (M.Lib), Master of Library and Information Science (M.LISc) or a Post Graduate Diploma in Library Science, Master of Philosophy in Library Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Library Science.

The duration for the Certificate course is usually six months which includes 250 hours of theory and 150 hours of practical classes.

The Diploma course runs for one year.

The Bachelor’s degree runs for two years.

Eligibility criteria for the Certificate Course and Diploma Course are 10+2 (senior secondary) with any stream – Science, Arts or Commerce. For the Bachelor’s degree, the eligibility criteria are that the candidate should qualify in Diploma Courses of Library Sciences and should be a graduate from a recognized college.


The examination consists of theory as well as practical classes of the course material which has been studied through the duration of the course.
