Food Technology

Food Technology can be explained as a bough of food science that engages in the process of creation that produces food. It is a science which deals with the technique and concepts involved in the processing and conserving the food substances. The professionals in this field work to improvise production methods through preservation, storage, and new product development.

Food Technology basically involves a whisk of physical, Chemical and microbiological processes and proficiency for transforming raw materials into edible food and also other molds in food processing industry.

The study of Food Technology involves developing new methods, systems for keeping food products safe and resistant from natural harms such as bad bacteria and other micro-organisms. The modern and advanced scientific methods of food processing techniques are the key to thriving supermarkets existing in society.

Course and Duration

There are four types of programmes in the field of food technology in India. They are explained as:

  • Polytechnic diploma course with a duration of 3 years
  • Diploma Course in Food Analysis and Quality Assurance
  • Diploma in Food Science Technology
  • Diploma in Food Science, Preservation and Management
  • UG degree courses leading to the B.Sc and B.Tech with the duration of 4 years.
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Food Technology
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Food Science
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Food and Nutrition
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Food Preservation
  • PG degree courses leading to the M.Sc and M.Tech with the duration of 2 years.
  • Master of Science (M.Sc) in Food Science
  • Master of Science (M.Sc) in Food Technology
  • Master of Science (M.Sc) in Food and Fermentation Technology and Food Science
  • Master of Science (M.Sc) in Food and Nutrition
  • Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Food Technology
  • Doctoral degree courses leading to the Ph.D. domain with the duration of 1-2 years.

Admission Procedure

Many of Indian colleges or the universities have marked the criterion of entrance examination for the admission in any of the food technology programmes.

The admission is strictly based on the minimum 50% marks in the qualifying examination and the score in the entrance examination, followed by the counseling and personal interview.

The students from the different patch in education degree in the UG programme such as the UG in hotel management, B.Sc with life science or the UG in home science may get the admission in PG degree courses in the field of food technology.

Eligibility Criteria

Some universities in India offer degree courses in food technology and food science. There are also institutes offering postgraduate courses in specialized aspects of food processing.

  • Candidates with PCM or PCB at 10+2 level can opt for undergraduate courses in food technology, food science, and home science.
  • For admission to M.Sc( Food science/food technology), eligibility criteria are B.Sc.( Food science/food technology).
  • The individual should have a thorough knowledge of subjects like food biology, food biotechnology, microbiology, food packaging, food preservatives and additives, logistics management, marketing, etc.


The entrance examinations for food technology includes the following, which is conducted by the various universities in India:

  • JEEP 2019 (Joint Entrance Examination Polytechnic)
  • CFTRI (Central Food Technological Research Institute Entrance Examination)
  • IICPT (Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology Entrance Examination)
  • GATE 2019 (Graduate Aptitude Test Examination)

The candidates must have to appear in JEEP entrance examination for admission to a polytechnic diploma.

The job of food technologists entails:

  • In charge of guiding the processing, conservation, and preservation of foodstuffs.
  • Creating new foodstuffs, improving flavors keeping the nutritive value intactImproving existing techniques for economizing processing, adding value, creating new tastes for providing impetus to the marketing and consumption of processed foodstuffs
  • Evolving measures such as infestation control, fungicidal treatment, and insecticidal storage to protect foods from spoilage and damage
  • Examining foodstuffs for contamination, adulteration, food value, etc. by biochemical and nutrition tests and quality control measures

Developing new methods and processes for recovering useful and utilizable by-products from industrial and domestic wastes of foodstuffs.
